Welgama requests seat in Opposition benches

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama says he has requested Parliament to allocate a seat for him in the Opposition.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal, MP Welgama said he had no ethical right to take his seat in the government when the new session commences as he did not support President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election.

The Parliamentarian claimed he will sit in the Opposition as a member of the United People’s Freedom Alliance.

He noted that members of the UPFA were part of both the Opposition as well as the government during the tenure of former President Maithripala Sirisena.

The MP stressed he will extend his support towards positive initiatives of the government and will oppose the unsuitable initiatives.

MP Welgama also rejected reports that he plans on joining the United National Party.

However, the MP added he is yet to reach a decision on the party he will be contesting under at the General Election.
