“Sri Lanka to become an export led economy” – Prime Minister

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeisinghe said that the aim of the Government is to gradually change Sri Lanka into an export led economy within the next five-years.

He said that when the export income increases there will be an increase of jobs as well. “We have started a program to settle the foreign debt through exports and tourism”, he added.

The Prime Minister made these remarks on Wednesday (24) at the opening ceremony of the Flex-Print Factory at Flinth Commercial Park, Kadawata.

“We request exporters to increase their production and the income and thereby enter the competitive market. Our aim is to strengthen the local entrepreneurs to enter the export market.”

He said that the GSP Plus tariff concession was not given to the country by the European Union (EU) on a platter, but due to the formation of the Good Governance Government under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. “We’ll give concessions for about three, four-years. We should achieve our goals within the next two-years. The private sector has also been given the responsibility of providing jobs to the youngsters.”
