“Spider-Man: Homecoming” shoots to $257 million global debut

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Jon Watts’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming” has proven a global success with the movie taking in $117 million domestically and a further $140 million overseas to deliver a $257 million global opening weekend haul. That’s on par with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” which managed $252.5 million globally in its debut weekend.

The result was enough to push the Marvel Cinematic Universe past the $12 billion mark globally. ‘Homecoming’ launched in about 60% of international territories this weekend and is playing heavily in those markets, but even so there’s still some key ones (France, Germany, Spain, Japan, and China) to come.

Elsewhere “Despicable Me 3” pulled in a further $34 million domestically and a whopping $139 million overseas including the biggest opening weekend for an animated movie in China with $66 million.

Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” held strong at the United States (US) box-office with a fall of just 38% and a second weekend haul of $12.8 million for third place. “Wonder Woman” and “Transformers: The Last Knight” came in fourth and fifth with the pair expected to respectively pass the three-quarters and half billion global box-office marks by Monday.

On the speciality front, “The Big Sick” expanded to take in a further $3.7 million in eighth place while “A Ghost Story” opened to a very robust $27,017 per screen average across four screens.
