Secretary attends Navy Passing Out ceremony in Trincomalee

UTV | COLOMBO – Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kapila Waidyaratne, PC was the Chief Guest of the Navy Passing Out ceremony held at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee yesterday (18th Dec.).

39 Midshipmen of the 54th Cadet Entry Intake (02), 31st Intake of Sir John Kotalawela Defence University (05), and 56th Cadet Entry Intake (32) received their Commission upon the completion of their training at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) and onboard Naval ships.

Addressing those present, Secretary Waidyaratne said the young officers that they have to face challenges diligently, proving the strenuous training, they received from this prestigious training institution. He said that the Sri Lankan Navy has proved its mettle under the most trying circumstances not only during the war but also in the post conflict peace, reconciliation and national development. Stressing the need to maintain the hard-fought peace for the future generations, he requested them to strive hard to repay the debt that the nation owes to its War Heroes.

The Navy, as the first line of defence has a greater role to play in protecting the country’s increased territorial waters and its resources. The government has invested heavily on purchasing ships to strengthen the blue waters capabilities of the Navy and as the next generation of naval leaders you should use these resources and serve the nation, he said.

During the ceremony, awards were presented to officers for their outstanding performances during training.
