Presidential Election Act to be amended

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Justice and Legal Reforms says attention is being drawn to amend the Presidential Election Act.

The Ministry issuing a statement said the amendment of the Act was discussed during a discussion held last evening during which the events of the 2019 Presidential Election were also subject to discussion.

The discussion took place between a committee comprising officials of the Attorney General’s Department and the Election Commission including Minister of Justice Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Difficulties faced by election officials due to the high number of Presidential candidates at the recent election were also discussed.

Minister de Silva has also issued directives to look into and table recommendations to remove any legal obstacles in the way of the conduct of the Provincial Council Election.

The Ministry added that issues faced by postal voters were also subject to discussion.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva noted that all proposed amendments will be tabled in Parliament following the consent of the Cabinet of Ministers.
