President calls for program to combat ragging

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena has issued directives to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to formulate a programme in collaboration with university administrators to combat ragging at state Universities in the country.

President Sirisena while denouncing the recent ragging incident at the University of Peradeniya, stressed the government will not entertain brutality and lawlessness within state universities.

Addressing an event in Matugama today (22nd Wednesday) the Head of State noted the government will not hesitate to fulfill its responsibilities pertaining to university students.

President Maithripala Sirisena said the ragging incident that was reported on Sunday at the Peradeniya University was a blow to the concept of freedom of education.

President Sirisena stressed such issues will not only blemish the reputation of universities, but also the freedom of education.
