The premises appeared to be a torture house: Peradeniya Varsity requests police and CID support to wipe out ragging

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Administration of the Peradeniya University requests the support of the Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to eliminate ragging that takes place beyond university premises.

The Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Upul Dissanayake noted that information has been received regarding locations outside of university premises in which ragging takes place.

It has come to light that students are being taken to private houses for ragging similar to the recent incident in Kandy, Megodakalugamuwa.

The VC accordingly, requested the aid of the Police and CID to conduct investigations.

Further the Vice chancellor noted that the suspected students had videos of the ragging.

He added that the videos would be produced before courts as evidence.

Two students from Peradeniya University’s Faculty of Agriculture were remanded when they were produced before Kandy Additional Magistrate Rangani Gamage.

They will be in remand until the 2nd of March.

Police received a tip-off that these suspects were ragging a group of first year students in a house at Megodakalugamuwa, on Sunday (19th) night.

Police investigations revealed that a house had been rented out by the suspects providing false information since the 2nd of January.

The premises appeared to be a torture house.

The 8 students who were subjected to ragging are currently receiving treatment at Peradeniya hospital.

The director of the hospital Dr. Jayabandu Herath noted they will undergo medical examinations.

However, the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) says that they stand against ragging in universities.
