‘No increase in consumer goods prices’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Foundation to Protect Consumer Rights says although domestic gas prices have been slashed based on the pricing formula, the move will not result in the reduction of prices in consumer goods.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal, Chairman Asela Sampath commended the government’s move to reduce the price of domestic LP Gas cylinders.

He noted at this moment, the civil society has identified that prices of essential goods have risen sharply and unexpectedly, adding for an example a kilo of onions cost Rs.330.

He said if the increasing price is used by the government as tax revenue this would be acceptable, however this amount goes to the pockets of black market vendors.

Sampath said a limited number of businessman import onions and conceal them and at a point there is a shortage, they release it into the market.

Therefore he urged the government must intervene immediately to mitigate such black market vendors.

He stressed authorities must build an environment where people can live freely before an election.

Sampath reiterated that Simply because gas prices dropped, the prices of consumer goods won’t reduce.

The retail price of a domestic 12.5kg LP Gas cylinder was reduced by 251 rupees with effect from midnight yesterday.

Accordingly the price of a domestic gas cylinder has been reduced by 240 rupees in the Colombo District.

The revision comes into effect through the recently introduced pricing formula.

Accordingly, the retail price of a domestic gas cylinder has been reduced from 1,733 rupees to 1,493 rupees.

The prices of 5kg and 2.3kg LPG gas cylinders have also been reduced by 95 rupees and 30 rupees respectively.

The retail price of a domestic gas cylinder will be revised once every two months.
