UTV | COLOMBO – New Zealand beat West Indies by 5 wickets in the 1st ODI at Whangarei.

With this win, the home team takes a 1 nil lead in the 3-match series.

Batting first, the visitors totalled 248 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Chris Gayle made 22 while Evin Lewis top scored with 76.

Rovman Powell made a 50-ball 59.

Doug Bracewell bagged 4 for 55 and Todd Astle captured 3 for 33 in bowling for the Kiwis.

In reply, Colin Munro (49 off 36 balls) and George Worker (57 off 66 balls) gave a strong start by adding 108 runs for the 1st wicket in 16.4 overs.

Ross Taylor made an unbeaten 49.

The Kiwis reached the winning target in 46 overs.
