Mopeds & trucks to receive temporary relief

(UTV|COLOMBO) – All Police Stations have been informed to temporarily suspend enacting the law against trucks with canvas coverings, without a permit, and for riding 49CC mopeds without a valid license.

State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena speaking at a media briefing said the order was issued by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa taking into consideration the number of complaints received and the inconveniences the public will have to endure during the festive season.

The State Minister said a permit of Rs.25,000 needed to be obtained in the past in order to put up a canvas covering for trucks, adding however that the price was reduced to Rs.500 by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa during his term as President in 2009.

State Minister Abeywardena said several drivers continue to put up canvas coverings without permits.

He said President Rajapaksa had informed the Police to delay enacting the law in this regard, due to several complaints received over inconvenience caused during the festive season.

Meanwhile State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene vehemently condemned all allegations levelled at the government over alleged unlawful arrests. The State Minister said the government will not act contrary to the law.
