LG Polls: Election Commissioner issued notice to appear before SC

UTV | COLOMBO – The Supreme Court today (15) issued notices to the Chairman of the Election Commission to appear before courts on 8th of January.

The order was issued after considering a Fundamental Rights petition filed by the former UPFA Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha member, Helapriya Nandaraja against the Delimitation Gazette.

The Chief Justice Priyasad Depp said that the Chairman of the Election Commission should be inquired into with regard to the content of the FR petition.

The petitioner said that Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha has been divided into 3 wards by the latest delimitation and even the Sacred Sripada has also been divided.

He added that it could lead to religious disharmony.

Meanwhile the Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya there were many reasons for the rejection of nominations papers submitted by several political parties and independent groups.

Around 14 nomination lists submitted by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi, and independent groups were rejected yesterday (14).

According to Deshapriya, last minute handing over of nominations, negligence, and believe in astrology were some of the main reasons to reject nominations.

The Chairman said that the Commission had a help-desk at every nomination centers to extend support to the political parties to properly fill the nomination papers.

He said, however, certain political party representatives refused to get the support of the services which had led to mistakes in their lists.
