(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said that legal action would be taken against 30 persons who had sold rice at a price higher than the maximum retail price fixed by the government.
Complaints have been received about vendors who sell rice at higher price in Colombo, Gampaha and several other places.
The raids had been carried out yesterday based on these complaints.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said that in the next few days too raids would be carried out in search of businessmen who sell rice at prices higher than the controlled price fixed by the Government.
The gazette notification with regard to imposing maximum price for rice was released midnight day before yesterday.
Accordingly, samba rice, except Keeri and Suduru varieties should be sold at a maximum price of 80 rupees per kilogram while Nadu should be sold at a maximum price of 72 per kilogram.
However, convener of the Association of Importers of Essential Commodities Hemaka Fernando stated that a shipload of rice from Myanmar is arriving in the country next week.
