Judicial remand of Lankan fishermen extended

(UDHAYAM, RAMANATHAPURAM) – The Ramanathapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court has extended the judicial remand of 3 Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen till January 18 after they were produced before the Court, The Hindu reported.

After A. Kannan, Judicial Magistrate II, who was in-charge of CJM Court refused to extend the judicial remand and ordered the production of the fishermen before the court at the earliest after the Court staff failed to produce them through videoconferencing on December 30, the three fishermen were produced in the Court on Wednesday (04).

Though the Magistrate had directed the Police to immediately produce the fishermen without specifying any date, they were produced only on Wednesday.

After recording their production in the court, CJM Jayaraj extended their remand.

The fishermen – R. Arulnesan (25), his brother R. Devanesan (23) alias Thambu from Kalikulam in Vavuniya and V. Viji (25) from Talaimannar were arrested by the Marine police of the Coastal Security Group (CSG) on October 22, when they were found to have strayed into the Indian waters at Arichalmunai, off Dhanushkodi after running out of fuel.
