‘Govt running Kantale Sugar factory is futile’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliamentarian Daya Gamage says the re-opening the Kantale Sugar factory as a government-owned entity, will be a futile move.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal, MP Gamage said at present a number of state-owned businesses are running at a loss and therefore claimed that operating another loss-making entity will only burden the tax payers of the country.

The former Minister said all state-run businesses including SriLankan Airlines, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Ceylon Electricity Board and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board are incurring heavy losses.

He added the Sevanagala Sugar Factory had incurred a loss of Rs.145 million before his investment of a sum of over Rs.1.8 million in the factory.
