(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Executive Committee of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Wednesday night (21) decided to resort to a trade union action that will lead to a countrywide token strike to begin at 8.00 AM on Thursday (22).

The strike will be held in protest against the functioning of the Private Medical Faculty at the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in Malabe, and condemning the Police attack on university students, during the protest staged at the Health Ministry on Wednesday.

The university students were protesting against the Malabe Private Medical Faculty.

Police fired water cannons at protesters from the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) to disperse demonstrations taking place in front of the Ministry of Health.

IUSF staged the protest demanding the termination of Malabe Private Medical Faculty.

A group of students entered the Ministry of Health to meet the Subject Minister earlier in the day.

However, a tense situation erupted when security guards attempted to prevent another group of protestors from entering the Ministry premises.
