Five Sri Lankans in Dubai on trial for stealing over Rs. 2.1 million worth of cash, jewellery

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Five Sri Lankan men on Monday (05) stood trial in an Emirati Court for breaking into a villa in Dubai and robbing cash and jewellery worth over Rs. 2.1 million (Dh 50,000).

When the case was taken up at the Court of First Instance, the production alleged that the five Sri Lankans, aged between 29 and 49, broke into a villa in Mirdif area after breaking the locks and robbed valuables, Khaleej Times reported.

They got away with Dh15,000 in cash and jewellery – a gold and diamond necklace, three gold earrings, gold pins, two watches and two wallets., including cash and jewellery, worth more than Dh 50,000 (Rs. 2.1 million).

“On July 8, 2016, I was out of the UAE on my annual leave, and three days later, I received a phone call from my villa gardener. He asked whether I had left the main door open and left a chair outside,” the 50-year-old Pakistani complainant, a professor, said.

“I told my nephew, who lived in Ajman, to check on the villa. He then informed me that the villa had been burglarized. He found the place in a mess and the doors had been broken.”

“I came back five days later and found that our gold and diamond jewellery was missing. The stolen valuables were worth Dh50,000.”

A police corporal said they nabbed two of the accused in Sharjah on July 18, 2016. The two thieves then led the police to the whereabouts of the other accomplices. All the defendants admitted to the robbery charge during the investigation.
