Appeal Court’s full verdict on petition against Gotabhaya to be delivered tomorrow

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Appeal Court’s full verdict outlining the decisions to reject a petition challenging Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s dual citizenship is to be delivered tomorrow (Oct 15).

Earlier this month, the Appeal Court rejected a petition filed by two civic activists who argued that the dual citizenship certificate of Rajapaksa was invalid – a case which could have obstructed the candidature of Rajapaksa.

The petitioners argued that the certificate had been issued by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2005 when a cabinet of ministers was not functioning, although citizenship matters had been handled by the Defence Ministry at that time.

A judge bench comprising Appeal Court President Yasantha Kodagoda, Arjuna Obeysekera, and Mahinda Samayawardana will issue the final verdict containing the reasons to dismiss the petition, tomorrow.

The National Election Commission has declared Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as an eligible candidate.
