Postal strike called off

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The postal strike had been temporarily called off Thursday night (29) following a written assurance given by the Sub-Committee set up to resolve issues faced by the postal employees.

The suspension came following Thursday night’s discussion with authorities of the Postal Department including the Post Master General.

Accordingly, the Committee members had agreed to find solutions to postal employees’ problems within a two-week period after submitting a proposal to the Cabinet. Also the Committee had agreed to negotiate terms and conditions regarding the sale of the Post Offices in Galle Fort, Nuwara Eliya, and Kandy, so that a solution agreed upon by both parties will be put forward.

Over the last three-days, a consequence of the strike has left more than one million letters back logged at the Central Postal Exchange and other Post Offices. The public were severely inconvenience due to delays in receiving mail for three-days at a stretch.
