PM notes first Buddhist majority State in India

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a twitter message, noted the creation of the first Indian state with a Buddhist majority by way of enacting a Bill.

The Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday changed the terms of engagement with Jammu and Kashmir by amending the law. It will split the region into two union territories – ‘J&K and Ladakh’- instead of the status of a state given to it so far. Ladhak is a 70 per cent Buddhist majority area.

The Prime Minister tweeted that Ladakh would be the first Indian state with a Buddhist majority.

“I understand Ladakh will finally become an Indian State. Buddhists are 70% of Ladakh’s population and it will be the first Indian state with a Buddhist majority. The creation of Ladakh and the consequential restructuring are India’s internal matters,” he tweeted.
