“No need for a new Constitution,” Chief Prelates decides

(UDHAYAM, KANDY) – The Chief Prelates of three Nikayas and other Sangha Sabhas Tuesday (04) decided there is no need for a new Constitution in Sri Lanka.

The Chief Prelates, who convened in Kandy on Tuesday, unanimously decided there was no need to bring in a new Constitution or an Amendment to the Constitution.

However, the Parliament has already commenced the process of drafting a new Constitution or Amending the existing one. Making changes to the current Constitution was an election pledge of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The special Sangha Council was attended by three Chief Prelates of the three Nikayas and 75 other Theras at the Sri Chandrananda Hall in Asgiriya.

Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, Ven. Balangoda Sobhitha Thera, Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusaladamma Thera, Asgiriya Maha Lekakadhikari Medagama Dhammananda Thera, Dr. Godagama Sri Sumangala Thera, Asgiriya Deputy Lekakadhikari Dr. Narampanawe Ananda Thera, and Ven. Keppetigoda Siriwimala Thera also attended the Council.
