New solution for Indo Sri Lanka fishermen issue

(UTV|COLOMBO) -The Ministry of Fisheries says steps will be taken to solve the persistent Indo-Sri Lanka fishermen issue by erecting a barrier at the International Maritime Boundary Line between Sri Lanka and India.

State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Sanath Nishantha speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle said Lankan fishermen will be able to catch a good haul of fish through this measure.

The State Minister said it is mostly South Indian fishermen that infiltrate Lankan waters.

He charged that recently around 1,000 Indian fishing vessels had reached the boundary line.

State Minister Nishantha noted the President was educated on the matter claiming that it was also discussed during the President’s recent visit to India.

The State Minister added they will use scraps of old SLTB buses and vehicles to set up a barrier to prevent Indian fishermen from encroaching Lankan waters.

The State Minister said the matter cannot be solved diplomatically.
